Sell-out crowd looking to carry Latvia to first Olympics since 1936

It was a tough affair for both teams as Latvia and Brazil did their job in the Semi-Finals at the Arena Riga to earn themselves the chance of a spot in the summer games.

Latvia, led by Banchi’s pretorian in club and country Rihards Lomazs (20 points), was in the driver’s seat for the whole game, but the Indomitable Lions made sure they were too close for comfort until the very end.

Brazil, with Yago Santos not at its best, once again had to thank Bruno Caboclo’s energy (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Marcelinho Huertas’ ageless skill (13 points, 7 assists) for their qualification to the OQT Finals.

The teams now face each other again after they met in the Second Round of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, when Latvia put 20 points between Brazil and them.

Latvia vs Brazil Preview

Both Latvia and Brazil love running, and aren’t afraid of shooting. Their style of play is quite similar, although Brazil have a great pick & roll option in Bruno Caboclo, something the Latvians might be lacking as an offensive outlet.

The former Partizan Mozzart big man has been Brazil’s engine this tournament, averaging 16.7 points and 8 boards, while playing a crucial role in both ends of the floor for Aco Petrovic’s team.

Latvia’s offense has been more “democratic”, with Virtus Bologna’s Rihard Lomazs being one of the three players averaging 10+ points per game in Riga.

Luca Banchi’s team has been exceptional at converting turnovers into points (22.7 per game) and Brazil will need to take extra care with the ball to avoid giving Latvia free chances in transition.

With both teams loving fast-paced basketball and not shy of running, Latvia vs Brazil is going to be a spectacular display of what Europe and the Americas have to offer in the world of basketball.

Will the crowd be the difference once again?
