Puerto Rico need to make history as they face Lithuania in home OQT
Los 12 Magnificos have an exciting challenge ahead of them as they host Lithuania in front of a roaring crowd to get a shot at the Summer Games.
The only problem with that: Lithuania have looked like an unstoppable force. The “Green Death” as appropriately nicknamed, steamrolled Italy, imparting Pozzecco’s team a 64-88 beating.
Marius Grigonis looked absolutely unstoppable, racking 23 points on 8/12 from the field, while BCL hero Kuzminskas provided 14 points in 18 minutes, only missing one shot.
Coach Kazys Maksvytis was free to not play any of his players more than 23 minutes and will count on a fresh, confident roster ahead of a final where they’re firm favorites.
Coach Nelson Colon had the same luxury during Puerto Rico’s 98-78 Semi-Final win over Mexico, where the home fans were able to see once again the best Tremont Waters (24 points in 21 minutes).
No player played more than 21 minutes, setting up for a fascinating final at the Coliseo might be the x factor, with the home fans ready to witness history as Nelson Colon did in the stands in 2004.
Puerto Rico vs Lithuania Preview
Jose Alvarado will be a key man as he might be the designated player to try and keep Marius Grigonis quiet. Perimeter defense will be a necessity but might not be enough, as Lithuania can count on Domantas Sabonis to make things happen inside.
Despite being favorites, Lithuania will need to watch out and take care of the ball extremely well: Puerto Rico have been elite in transition, scoring 15 points from fastbreaks and 18 off turnovers.
They’ve had contributions from the starters but also 47.3 points per game from the bench (skewed by the Bahrain game).
