Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic meeting for the first time with iconic Piraeus as backdrop
This is the moment all basketball fans were hoping for when thinking about the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments: the first international meeting between Slovenia’s Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The duo total 13 all-star appearances, 11 all-NBA first team finishes, and, in the case of The Greek Freak, two MVP awards, and one Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP award.
The whole world of basketball will be watching as Vassilis Spanoulis’ Greece, looking much sharper than in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, take on Luka’s Slovenia.
Greece vs Slovenia preview
If the duel between Giannis and Luka can somewhat be seen as hanging in the balance, Greece is the outright favorite in all the other departments.
Hellas’ roster is looking great, averaging 101 ppg in their two group games, and able to rest Giannis in their 2nd game against Egypt (and still winning comfortably).
The Greeks are shooting 61% from the field, and 48% from deep. They are leading the pack in defensive, hustle stats and taking care of the ball extremely well.
The level of their group was not a match for Slovenia’s, matched with Croatia and New Zealand, but this group of players is performing at the level everyone expects Greece to be.
Led by Luka’s two triple-doubles, the Slovenians have somewhat stumbled in the group phase, with some nervy moments in their game against the Tall Blacks, but finished with one missed corner three away from clinching first place.
If Slovenia want to have a chance against Greece, they’ll need to do better than the 23.2% from three they have achieved thus far.
They will probably also need to improve ball circulation, with Greece’s smothering defense and double-teams on Luka forcing the Balkans nation to find answers elsewhere.
It’s looking like a shoe-in for Greece, but Luka is no stranger to starting as the underdog. Will Slovenia climb the mountain, or will we see the Piraeus cheering for Hellenic Basketball, one step closer to Mount Olympus?
