Latvia ready to host Georgia in front of 11,000 home fans

This Latvia team has been the story of the 2023 FIBA World Cup as, even without superstar Kristaps Porzingis, they managed to progress to the quarterfinals despite a tough draw.

Even then, Luca Banchi’s side was only edged by Germany, the team that went all the way to win the competition.

The ask is even tougher in this FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, with Trento’s Andrejs Gražulis missing from the final roster due to an injury he picked up while playing in Italy.

Luckily for Banchi and Latvia, Arturs Zagars and Rihards Lomazs will be present for a team that just lost their first game since the FIBA World Cup.

11,000 fans will turn up the heat for a team that is currently red-hot and wants to turn the Olympic dream into reality.

Georgia lost to Italy in their only preparation game for their Olympic qualifying endeavors, but they were without Sandro Mamukelashvili.

Positive signs came from their frontcourt, where Toko Shengelia scored 17 points and big man Goga Bitadze added a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Georgia-Latvia Preview

Latvia will head into the Arena Riga as favorites, although Georgia’s experience will make for a tough opponent.

It will be a true clash of styles, with Luca Banchi’s team taking advantage of quick threes in transition and high pace and Aleksandar Džikić’s more paint-oriented philosophy.

These coaches have shown they can make Latvia and Georgia more than the sum of their parts, and the spectacle from the Arena Riga will be one basketball fans won’t want to sleep on, with NBA-level players involved and a great atmosphere from Latvia.

While the Latvians will want to ensure they keep their form in front of their fans, the jvarosnebi will have looked at their football counterparts with inspiration as they compete to defy odds and come out on top.
