Angola revealed their extended roster for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024. The little-big star names to look out for are Childe Dundão and Bruno Fernando. TBoth players averaged a team-high 14 points per game during their 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Making his FIBA Basketball World Cup debut in 2023, Dundão is a diminutive point guard (he’s only 5ft 6in tall) who has been a major part of the Angolan side in recent years. He’s also been a force in the Angolan Basketball League, where he’s won four titles, two Angolan Cups and two Angolan Supercups since 2019. This year, he was also named the Angolan Cup Final MVP.
Big man Bruno Fernando only featured in one qualifying window due to his NBA commitments with the Atlanta Hawks. Other names to look out for in the Angola squad include several star contributors to their qualifying campaign, including Gerson Gonçalves, Gerson Domingos and Jilson Bango.

The current Angolan roster may be packed with talent, but kids on the streets of Luanda are trying to emulate the feats of one man: Joaquim ‘Kikas’ Gomes.
Gomes was a standout player at college, where he played for Valparaiso in the United States. He then enjoyed a stellar domestic career, where he won titles in Angola, Germany and the Netherlands.
However, he saved his very best performances for the national team. With Angola, he claimed four AfroBasket gold medals, one AfroBasket silver medal and two AfroBasket MVP trophies. He also featured for his country in four FIBA Basketball World Cups.
Historical World Cup Performance
Since joining FIBA in 1979, Angola has qualified for nine out of a possible 11 FIBA Basketball World Cups.
However, the Angola basketball team are yet to make the quarter-final stage at the tournament, with their best performance to date coming in 2006, when they finished 9th.
