The History of FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2023

FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2023 is the 27th edition of Africa’s biggest female basketball competition. Two nations above all others have dominated the showpiece event, Senegal and Nigeria.

Senegal is the most decorated Women’s AfroBasket team with twelve 1st place finishes. Their last title was in 2015. The golden era of this team’s success started in 1974 with their first title taking place in North Africa against Tunisia on their home court. Senegal’s most recent AfroBasket success came in 2015.

Nigeria, known as D’Tigress, defeated Mali 70-59 in the Women’s AfroBasket 2021 Final. They come into this tournament aiming to tie Senegal’s competition record of four African titles in a row. In 2019, Nigeria took the top prize away from Senegal in the Final, who were the host nation.

Mali enters the competition with the experience of participating in the FIBA Women’s World Cup 2022 and showed during AfroBasket two years ago they have the capability to have a deep tournament run.

Who are the best players in FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2023?

Senegal is set to welcome back two-time MVP of Women’s AfroBasket, Aya Traore. She earned those honors the last two times that Senegal were crowned champions, in 2009 and 2015. Traore’s last campaign was in 2017 were Senegal reached the Final. Senegal is scheduled to play Mali on Sunday 30th July in a highly anticipated Group Phase match.

Egyptian hopes hang largely on the performances of Soraya Degheidy. The incredibly poised Point Guard is entering her prime at the age of 27. Egypt have been drawn in a tough Group D with defending champs Nigeria and Congo DR, who boast a strong pedigree in the competition’s formulative years.

Significant pre-tournament buzz has been building around the Women’s AfroBasket debut of Mali’s Sika Kone. She will be known to many having been picked by the Chicago Sky in the 2022 WNBA Draft. The prodigious basketball star is regarded as the best African player of her generation. The talented Center turned heads when averaging a double-double during the 2021 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup.

Angola and team anchor, Avelina Peso, will be looking to put their stamp on Group A against host nation Rwanda and Cote d’Ivoire. It has been a decade since Angola were back-to-back winners of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket and will no doubt be inspired by the national pride and positivity that came with the Angola men’s team qualifying for the FIBA World Cup 2023.

Don’t rule out Mozambique making some noise with the twin talents of Leia Dongue and Tamara Seda. They will be confident of topping Group B with Cameroon and Guinea and taking the next step into AfroBasket championship contention.

Completing our list is returning MVP of the 2021 Women’s AfroBasket, Adaora Elonu, who will lead the defending champs out as Captain, in their attempt to keep Nigeria on top of the African women’s game.
